1. About Our Nguni Hides

  • Are your Nguni hides genuine?
Yes. Our Nguni hides are genuine South African hides, sourced locally and processed in our own tannery in KwaZulu-Natal. We do not import our hides.
  • Will I receive the exact hide shown online?
Yes. Each hide is individually photographed, and you will receive the exact hide displayed in the main product image.
  • Are any two Nguni hides the same?
No. Every hide has its own natural pattern, colouring, shape and markings, making it completely unique.
  • Where do your Nguni hides come from?
Our hides are responsibly sourced within South Africa and processed locally at our own tannery.
  • Are the cattle slaughtered for their hides?
No. The hides are a by-product of the local meat industry. By tanning them, we transform a natural by-product that may otherwise go to waste into a durable product that can be enjoyed for many years.
  • What does ethically sourced mean?
It means that our hides are sourced as by-products of the meat industry rather than cattle being slaughtered specifically for their hides.
  • Are the hides imported?
No. We do not sell cow hides. Our hides are sourced in South Africa and finished locally in our own tannery.
  • What colours and patterns are available?
Nguni hides occur naturally in an extraordinary variety of colours and patterns, including black and white, brown and white, red and white, solid colours, speckled patterns, brindle and rare tri-colour hides.
  • Why do Nguni hides have different shapes?
Each hide follows the natural shape and size of the individual animal, so slight differences in outline and proportions are completely normal.
  • Do the colours look exactly the same in person?
We photograph each hide as accurately as possible. However, colours may appear slightly different depending on lighting and your phone or computer screen settings.
  • Do the hides have natural markings or imperfections?
Yes. Small scars, branding marks, variations in hair direction and other markings are part of the hide’s natural history and individual character. More noticeable imperfections are reflected in the hide’s grade.
  • How are your hides processed?
Our hides are professionally processed and finished in our own tannery in Dundee, KwaZulu-Natal.
  • Do Nguni hides shed?
A properly cared-for hide should not shed. You are more than welcome to contact us should you have any concerns.
  • How long does a Nguni hide last?
With appropriate care, a genuine Nguni hide is highly durable and can remain beautiful for many years.
  • Can you source a particular colour or pattern?
We cannot guarantee a specific hide because all patterns occur naturally, but you’re welcome to tell us what you’re looking for. We can let you know when a suitable hide becomes available.
  • What happens when a hide is sold?
Each hide is one of a kind. Once it has been purchased, that exact hide is no longer available, but we may be able to recommend a similar option.

Product Sizes and Placement

  • What size are your Nguni hides?
Sizes vary because every hide follows the natural shape of the animal. Please check the measurements in the individual product description or contact us if you need help choosing the right size.
  • Where can I use a Nguni hide?
Nguni hides can be used as floor rugs, wall features, furniture throws or decorative statement pieces. They are best suited to dry indoor areas.

2. Hide Grades and Natural Markings

  • How are your Nguni hides graded?
Our hides are graded according to their natural markings, imperfections and the rarity or demand for their colour pattern. All grades are processed using the same tanning method and receive the same level of care and quality finishing.
  • Does a lower grade mean lower tanning quality?
No. All our Nguni hides are tanned and finished to the same quality standard. The grade relates primarily to visible natural markings or repaired areas—not the tanning quality.
  • What is the difference between Premium, Select and Standard hides?
Premium hides generally have fewer visible imperfections and may feature especially desirable patterns. Select hides offer an excellent balance of appearance and value. Standard hides may have more visible natural markings or professionally repaired areas but are still genuine, durable Nguni hides.
  • What are natural markings?
Natural markings can include scars, branding marks, scratches, variations in hair direction and differences in the hide’s shape or texture. They reflect the animal’s natural life and make every hide unique.
  • Do Standard hides have holes?
Standard hides may originally have had small holes or damaged areas, but these are professionally stitched or patched during finishing. We do not sell hides with open holes.
  • Will natural markings become worse over time?
Not normally. When the hide is used and cared for correctly, existing natural markings or professionally repaired areas should remain stable.
  • Are natural markings considered defects?
Natural markings are not necessarily defects. They are part of the character and history of a genuine hide. More visible markings are taken into account when the hide is graded and priced.
  • Are Premium hides completely free from natural markings?
Not always. Genuine hides are natural products, so even Premium hides may have subtle scars, slight variations or branding marks. However, they generally have fewer noticeable imperfections.
  • What is a professionally repaired area?
During finishing, a small, damaged area may be neatly stitched or reinforced with a patch on the underside. This helps strengthen the hide and prevents an open hole while preserving its natural appearance.
  • Can I see the markings before ordering?
Yes. Each hide is individually photographed, and you will receive the exact hide shown online. We recommend viewing all available product images closely before purchasing. You are welcome to whatsapp us the hide you are looking at purchasing and we will gladly assist with close up photos of the hide and any imperfections
  • Which grade should I choose?
Choose Premium if you want fewer visible markings or a highly sought-after pattern. Select offers a balance of beauty and value, while Standard is ideal if you appreciate natural character and want the best value.
  • Why can two hides in the same grade have different prices?
Pricing may also reflect the hide’s size, pattern, colouring, rarity and overall visual appeal. Grade is one factor used when determining the price.

5. Care and Cleaning

  • How do I care for my Nguni hide?
Regularly shake out or gently vacuum your hide to remove dust and loose dirt. Use a low-suction setting and vacuum in the direction of the hair. Avoid vigorous rubbing or rotating brush attachments, as these may damage the hair.
  • How do I clean a spill?
Blot the spill immediately with a clean, dry, absorbent cloth. Do not rub, as this can spread the liquid and push it deeper into the hide. Once the excess moisture has been removed, clean the area gently with a suitable hair-on-hide cleaner.
  • Which cleaning product should I use?
We recommend our specially formulated Hair-on-Hide Cleaner, which is suitable for caring for Nguni hides and other hair-on-hide products. Always follow the directions on the bottle.
  • Can I wash or soak my Nguni hide?
No. Do not machine-wash, soak or fully submerge a Nguni hide in water. Excess moisture can damage the leather backing and affect the hide’s shape.
  • Can I use household cleaning products on my hide?
Avoid bleach, strong detergents, solvents, disinfectants and harsh household cleaners. These products may damage the hair, alter the colour or dry out the leather backing.
  • How should I dry my hide after cleaning?
Allow it to dry naturally in a well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight and artificial heat. Do not use a hairdryer, heater or tumble dryer.
  • Can I place my hide in direct sunlight?
Extended exposure to strong, direct sunlight may cause the colours to fade or the leather backing to dry out. We recommend rotating the hide occasionally and positioning it away from prolonged direct sunlight where possible.
  • Can I place furniture on my hide?
Yes. Furniture can be placed on a Nguni hide. Move or rotate the hide occasionally to reduce uneven wear and prevent permanent pressure marks.
  • Can I use my hide in a high-traffic area?
Yes, but frequent foot traffic will naturally cause more wear over time. Rotate the hide regularly and keep it away from wet entrances or areas where it may be exposed to excessive dirt.
  • How do I prevent the edges from curling?
Allow a newly unpacked hide time to settle naturally. If an edge lifts, gently reverse-roll that section for a short period or place a flat, weighted object on it.
  • How do I remove creases after transit?
Your hide may develop temporary folds or creases while packaged for delivery. Lay the hide flat, place a clean, flat bedsheet over it and gently iron over the covered area using the iron’s steam setting. The combination of warmth and light moisture will help the hide settle. You can place the iron directly onto the hair if there are stubborn creases, avoid holding it in one spot for too long or you will burn the hair. Allow the hide to lie flat and dry naturally afterwards. Do not iron the underside of the hide as this could burn the leather.
  • How should I store my hide?
Store it clean and dry in a cool, well-ventilated area - preferably laying flat on the floor or draped over a sofa not in use. Alternatively, roll it with the hair facing outward rather than folding it, as folding may create permanent creases. Avoid storing it in plastic for long periods.
  • Can I use my Nguni hide outdoors?
Nguni hides are intended mainly for indoor use. Occasional use in a dry, covered area is possible, but the hide should not be exposed to rain, moisture or prolonged direct sunlight.
  • What should I do if my hide develops an odour?
Air it naturally in a dry, shaded and well-ventilated space. Do not apply perfume, strong chemicals or deodorising sprays. If the odour persists, contact us for advice before using any treatment.
  • How long will my Nguni hide last?
With suitable placement and regular care, a genuine Nguni hide is durable and can remain beautiful for many years.
  • Do you offer a professional hide-cleaning service?
Yes. We can arrange professional cleaning for older Nguni and other hair-on hides at an additional fee. Please contact us with photographs and information about the hide so that we can assess its condition, confirm the cost and explain the collection or delivery arrangements. Please note that some stains, hair loss, damage or age-related wear may not be fully reversible.
  • What is your Hair-on-Hide Cleaner used for?
Our Hair-on-Hide Cleaner is specially formulated for the regular care and spot-cleaning of Nguni hides and other hair-on-hide products. It helps remove light dirt, marks and everyday spills while freshening the hide.
  • How do I use the Hair-on-Hide Cleaner?
Remove any loose dirt first, then apply the cleaner according to the instructions on the bottle. Work gently in the direction of the hair using a clean cloth, avoiding excessive moisture or vigorous rubbing.
  • Can the Hair-on-Hide Cleaner remove every stain?
Results depend on the type and age of the stain. The cleaner is most effective when spills and marks are treated promptly, but old or deeply set stains may require professional cleaning and cannot always be removed completely.
  • Where can I purchase the Hair-on-Hide Cleaner?
Our Hair-on-Hide Cleaner is available to purchase directly from our online store. It can be ordered with a hide or purchased separately.

6. Returns and Exchanges

  • Can I return or exchange my order?
Yes. If you are not completely satisfied with your purchase, please contact us within 7 days of delivery so that we can assist you with a return or exchange.
  • How do I request a return or exchange?

  • How will my return be collected?

  • Can I exchange my Nguni hide for another hide?
Yes, subject to availability. Because every Nguni hide is unique, an identical replacement may not be available. We’ll help you choose another suitable hide from our current collection.
  • Can I receive a refund instead of an exchange?
We prefer to offer a suitable replacement or exchange wherever possible. However, a refund may be arranged where appropriate after the returned product has been received and assessed.
  • What happens if my order arrives damaged or incorrect?
Please contact us as soon as possible and include your order number and clear photographs of the product and packaging. Keep the original packaging until we have assessed the matter and advised you of the next steps.
  • Are natural markings considered damage?
No. Genuine Nguni hides may have natural scars, branding marks, variations in shape, changes in hair direction or professionally repaired areas. These form part of the hide’s natural character and grading and are not necessarily considered faults.
  • Can I return a hide because its colour looks different on my screen?
We photograph every hide as accurately as possible, but colours may vary slightly depending on lighting and screen settings. Please contact us if you are uncertain about a hide’s colouring before ordering.
  • Can personalised or custom-made products be returned?
Custom-made, personalised or specially ordered products generally cannot be returned because of a change of mind. Please contact us if the product arrives faulty, damaged or different from what was agreed.
  • How long does a refund take?
Once the returned item has been received and approved, the refund will be processed using the appropriate payment method. The time taken for the funds to reflect will depend on your bank or payment provider.

  • Are your soaps made with Halaal certified tallow?
Our tallow is sourced from major South African abattoirs, many of which are Halaal-certified suppliers. Based on our sourcing, we are confident that the majority of the tallow is from Halaal-certified facilities. However, because we cannot verify every individual batch with absolute certainty, we are unfortunately unable to market or guarantee the soap as officially Halaal certified at this stage.
