Our Story

From Dundee, With Pride

In the heart of Dundee, surrounded by the landscapes and farming traditions of KwaZulu-Natal, The Nguni Shop was built on something simple — a deep respect for the Nguni breed and the heritage it represents.
The Nguni hide is not just décor. It carries the story of the land, the animal, and generations of South African farming culture. Every natural marking, every variation in tone, is shaped by nature itself. No two are ever the same — and that is exactly what makes them special.

A Personal Journey

The Nguni Shop is owned by Hanno van den Berg, who took over the business from his brother in 2023. His involvement, however, began many years earlier, having been part of the on-site tannery since 2009. What started as a family venture gradually grew into something more; a passion project rooted in pride, authenticity, and long-standing experience.

Hanno owns the onsite tannery where our hides are carefully processed and finished. His hands-on involvement allows him to oversee the quality of every hide that leaves the facility. For him, it is not just about selling a product; it is about standing behind it with confidence and accountability.
Beyond the business, Hanno owns his own herd of Nguni cattle. While these cattle are not used in our hide production, they reflect his deep admiration for the breed; its resilience, its beauty, and its place in South African heritage. His connection to the Nguni is personal, not just professional.

Local, Authentic, and Proudly South African

We are proud members of Proudly South African, and we take that commitment seriously.
Our core focus is on South African Nguni hides, sourced and processed with care in KwaZulu-Natal. Each hide reflects the character of our local landscapes and the farming traditions that shape them. By working closely with regional suppliers and handling the tanning process in our own tannery, we maintain high standards of quality, transparency, and craftsmanship.
Every stage of our process — from selection to finishing — is guided by a respect for local skill, ethical sourcing, and the heritage behind the product. This approach allows us to deliver hides that are authentic, responsibly produced, and aligned with the values of South African enterprise.
Supporting The Nguni Shop means supporting local craftsmanship, heritage, and a commitment to quality that begins close to home.

From Our Hands to Your Home

Each hide is carefully selected for its character and natural beauty before being professionally finished in our tannery. We focus on quality you can see and feel — rich texture, durable finish, and distinctive pattern.
Our hides find their place in homes, lodges, and interior spaces that value warmth, texture, and authenticity. Whether styled in a contemporary setting or a more traditional space, a Nguni hide brings depth and individuality that cannot be replicated.
It is not mass-produced.
It is not imported.
It is naturally one of a kind.

A Note from Hanno
“The Nguni breed has always meant more to me than just business. It represents resilience, heritage, and the beauty of our South African landscape. My goal is simple — to offer hides that I am personally proud to stand behind. From our tannery in Dundee to your home, thank you for supporting local craftsmanship and being part of our story.”
